We are now in the North Island after having spent an amazing time in the South Island! In Maori this island is called Te Ika a Maui, which translates to the fish of Maui. According to the legend, the Polynesian god Maui, using as prow the Malborough Sounds and from his waka (canoe), which is the South Island, fished an enormous ika (fish) - the North Island. The jawbones of the head of the fish are still visible (if somebody sees the bay of Wellington). The mountains were hewn from the fish by Maui's brothers in their haste to divide the spoils.
